[SSJ: 156] Summary of Conference on Phil-Jpn Relations
From: Vincent K Pollard
Posted Date: 1995/08/02
1st International Conference on Philippines-Japan Relations, 28-29 July 1995 Manila Peninsula Hotel, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines.
Scholars from the Philippines and Japan met to discuss the following seven themes: historical relations; images and human relations; comparative culture;
state of the art of research; economic cooperation; human resources development and technology transfer; and new directions in Philippine-Japanese relations.
Some 23 papers were presented. Each panel had 2 commentators, and there was a limited amount of discussion from the floor.
Sponsoring was the Yuchengco Institute of Philippines-Japan Relations, De La Salle University, in cooperation wih the Japan Foundation.
I attended 6 of the 7 panels and participated in 4 of the open discussion periods. The following titles are, in my view, some of the better papers:
Ricardo Jose, "Political Effects of Japan's Occupation"
Trinidad Osteria, "The Filipinos in Japan: Demographic Trends and Patterns"
Elena Samonte, "Filipino-Japanese Marriages"
Kageaki Kajiwara, "The Myth of Yamashita Treasure: Its Role in Mutual Perceptions"
Akira Takahashi, "Japan's Official Development Assistance to the Philippines"
Temario Rivera, "Some Aspects of Technology Transfer in Japanese-Affiliated Firms in the Philippines"
Kiichi Fujiwara, "Autocratic Peace or Democratic Peace? Domestic origins of Regional Order in Southeast Asia"
[Moderator's Note: Professor Fujiwara is with the Institute of Social Science and is a member of SSJ-FORUM.]
Note: As may be obvious, family names folow personal names in the above list.
This is how the papers were listed in the conference program. All papers were in English.
I don't know if any copies of the papers are still for sale. But one might contact either of the following two e-mail addreses at the Yuchengco institute:
