Speaker: John Nathan
Professor Nathan, currently the Takashima Professor of Japanese Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has won distinction as a scholar, teacher, writer, translator, and film-maker. Publications include Mishima, A Biography (1975); Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness (translation of Warera no Kyoki o Ikinobiru Michi o Oshieyo by Kenzaburo Oe); A Personal Matter (translation of Kojinteki na Taiken by Oe); The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with the Sea (translation of Gogo no Eiko by Yukio Mishima). Professor Nathan accompanied Mr. Oe to Stockholm for the Nobel Prize ceremony and is now translating his latest book, The Flaming Green Tree (Moeagaru Midori no Ki).
