[SSJ: 1] Call For Papers
From: SSJ-Forum Moderator
Posted Date: 1995/5/29
This call for papers concerns a book, edited by Professors David Willis and Izumi Sato, and to be titled _Being Others in Japan: Multicultural Experiences in Japanese Society_
"In this book an open, flexible definition of culture will challenge traditional conceptions of 'culture' as something rigid, separate, strictly defined, and 'naturally' exclusive. The traditional view, which we call cultural exceptionalism, is supported by people like the 'America Firsters,' Japanese believers in Nihonjinron, and other proponents of an exclusive, ostensibly 'pure' monoculturalism. The transnational cultures we will view in the essays in this book will quite literally stand this traditional concept of culture as cultural exceptionalism on its head."
The editors encourage submissions by interested scholars.
