The Long-standing Liaison Between Sumo and the Media

Sumo is known as Japanese national sport with history of 1,500 years and said to remain unchanged from the Edo period.

Its Banzuke, or ranking chart, such as Yokozuna or Ozeki, and tournament system, however, were developed during Japan’s

modernization starting in Meiji era with much contribution of the media including TV, radio, and newspapers.

I-House is offering sessions for those interested in learning about Japanese culture in English. This time, we will be inviting

Dr. Lee Thompson, a specialist in sociology of sport in Japan, to introduce the unknown but close relationship between

sumo and the media.
