COCKTAIL PARTY is adapted from the Akutagawa Prize winning novel of the same title that details the complicated and often tragic relationship between the US military stationed in Okinawa, Japan and local residents. The screening will be preceded by recorded remarks by the director Regge Life.

Producer/Director Regge Life’s award winning ethnographic documentaries on Asia, West Africa and the Caribbean have won him international praise. His films are part of the permanent collections at more than 800 schools and libraries worldwide.

Regge Life received his M.F.A. in directing film and theater from New York University; His most recent documentaries are LIVE YOUR DREAM: The Taylor Anderson Story, chronicling the lives of two Americans who lost their lives in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and REASON TO HOPE, about the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He is currently the Distinguished Director in Residence at Emerson College.

“In Cocktail Party, writer-director Regge Life takes on the controversial subject of the American military presence on Okinawa and renders it powerful and personal. The essence of effective historical drama is to translate large geopolitical abstractions into concrete human interactions – and that is exactly what The Cocktail Party does. US-Japan relations, racial tensions, military presence in civil society, violence and rape, guilt and innocence, justice and injustice, truth and deception ... all these forces come into play in this compelling new film.” —Peter Grilli, Japan Society of Boston—
