The Department of Modern Japanese Studies at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf invites applications for the
Professorship of Modern Japanese Studies in the field of social sciences (grade W3 on the German university scale) to take up appointment on 1st April 2018.
The successful applicant will take up the professorship prior to the retirement of the current chair and will continue as sole chair thereafter.

We are seeking a scholar who has attained international recognition in the field of social science research on modern Japan. The successful candidate will be a leading expert in the field of social analysis of Japan’s development since 1945 and of contemporary Japanese social and political affairs. He or she should also have competence in the study of Japan in Asian as well as global contexts.
Further requirements are an excellent knowledge of theoretical approaches and research methodologies in these fields, excellent proficiency in Japanese, a PhD or doctoral degree in Japanese studies, a post-doctoral degree or comparable qualification (second book or equivalent), and a strong publication record demonstrating scholarly expertise in the social sciences of modern Japan.

The candidate is also expected to demonstrate successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding and an outstanding publication record in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals. Excellent achievements in teaching at the university level in the area of modern Japanese studies and a high degree of commitment to participation in administrative activities are also expected. Candidates with international research experience are particularly urged to apply.

Applicants will be hired in accordance with the North Rhine-Westphalia University Act (Hochschulgesetz) which requires an aptitude for teaching, exceptional competence in research, and additional scientific achievements.
