In the 21 century today, we are facing drastic changes globally. Accordingly, the challenge of the firms and local governments is how to instill and sustain innovation. To be innovative, knowledge creation is important, and the leaders with practical wisdom are necessary. In this forum, Prof. Nonaka will present the conditions necessary for sustaining innovative organization and leadership.

Speakers’ Profile:
Ikujiro Nonaka is a Professor Emeritus of the Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy, Hitotsubashi University, Xerox Distinguished Faculty Scholarof the University of California, Berkeley, and also the First Distinguished Drucker Scholar in Residence at the Drucker School, Claremont Graduate University. He received his B.A. (Political Science) from Waseda University, M.B.A.and Ph.D. (Business
Administration) from the University of California, Berkeley.
Professor Nonaka has been a Professor (1982-95) and Director (1995-98) at the Institute of Business Research, Hitotsubashi University. He has also been a Professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) and became the Dean of the School of Knowledge Science at JAIST in 1997. His academic career also includes terms as Professor in the Faculty of Management, Nanzan University (1977-1979), and in the Faculty of Social Science, National Defense Academy (1979-1982).

In Spring 2002, Professor Nonaka received double
honors: (1) he was conferred with a Purple Ribbon Medal by the Japanese government, and (2) he was elected a member of the Fellows Group of the Academy of Management in the U.S. (he is the first Asian scholar among the members). In Summer 2007, Professor Nonaka received the Booz Allen Hamilton Eminent Scholar in International Management Award at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management. In May 2008, he was chosen as one of the most influential business thinkers by Wall Street Journal. In Autumn 2010, He was conferred the Zuihōshō, or The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for his outstanding achievements and long-service and contributions in education. In June 2012, he received the Eminent Scholar Award by Academy of International Business (AIB).

Since its establishment in 1997, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), as the only graduate school in Japan specializing in policy research, has promoted education and research on a wide range of policy issues.
Utilizing our vast policy network, this Forum invites leaders from various fields including government, academia and business, as well as staff from our own faculty, to deliver lectures on current policy concerns.
The Forum welcomes attendance of GRIPS faculty and students as well as participants from outside the university. Simultaneous interpretation will be available (Japanese/English).
