UNU-ISP, together with the Center for Human Rights Education and Training and the Japan Association for United Nations Studies, is organizing a seminar on "Poverty and Human Rights - A Challenge for Us All" on Tuesday, 21 May 2013 from
16:00 -
18:00. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Donald Lye Poh Lee, Chair of the International Committee for October 17, which is the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The lecture by Dr. Lee will be followed by short comments by Professor Sukehiro Hasegawa of Hosei University and Ms. Kazuko Ito, Attorney-at-law and Secretary General of Human Rights Now.

The issue of extreme poverty is one of the most urgent matters that should be addressed by UN bodies and agencies as well as UN Member States and civil society organizations. The final draft of the Guiding Principles on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, which was prepared and submitted last year by the Special Rapporteur appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, stresses that "eradicating extreme poverty is not only a moral duty but also a legal obligation under existing international human rights law".

The seminar will give special focus to the human rights dimension of extreme poverty under which tens of millions of persons are forced to live.
