Overview

The rise of tensions between China and the United States has let to a comparison with the Soviet-American Cold War.

Narushige Michishita will look at the nature of the Soviet build-up in Asia, the US response and also Japan's military role in the support of America's
"maritime strategy" against Soviet power in Asia. He
will then point out the similarities as well as the differences between past conflict with the USSR and current tensions with China which have increased in recent years.

Speaker

Professor Michishita is associate professor and the director of the Security and International Studies Program at GRIPS. Previously, he served as senior research fellow at the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), Ministry of Defense and assistant counsellor at the Cabinet Secretariat for Security and Crisis Management of the Government of Japan. A specialist in strategic studies, his works include:
North Korea's Military-Diplomatic Campaigns, 1966-2008 (Routledge, 2010); "Japan's Response to Nuclear North Korea," in Gilbert Rozman, ed., Asia at A Tipping
Point: Korea, the Rise of China, and the Impact of Leadership Transitions (Korea Economic Institute, 2012); and "Hugging and Hedging: Japanese Grand Strategy in the Twenty-First Century," (with Richard J.
