Since the 1970s, the European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS) has organised several academic conferences at various European universities every three years. For example, the last EAJS conference in Tallinn (Estonia) attracted 700 scholars from all over the world. As announced at our last membership meeting, EAJS intends to organise one smaller conference in Japan within the triennial schedule.
Thanks to the fact that the EAJS has won the cooperation of the Faculty of Letters at Kyoto University as local conference host and organiser, the inaugural conference for the EAJS conferences in Japan will take place at Kyoto University. Moreover, all participants are invited to the pre-conference meeting at the International Centre of Japanese Studies
(Nichibunken) on 27 Sept. 2013, the day before the main conference. In the evening of 28 Sept. there will be cultural events and a reception. The conference will also be supported by the Kyoto ISEAS/European Consortium of Asian Field Study.
EAJS accepts paper proposals from scholars at all stages of their career. Although the conference is thematically open, we do especially encourage submissions related to Japanese - European interactions in any form. Divided into several two-hour sessions, every presentation will usually last up to 20 minutes.
The keynote speaker will be Professor Timon Screech of the London School of Oriental and African Studies.
Please note:

* Main language of academic communication is
English. However, presentations will be accepted in Japanese, if an English summary is provided.
* All accepted presenters need to be paid-up EAJS
members.
* Please note that presenters and participants need
to organise their travel and accommodation arrangements in Kyoto by themselves during the conference. However, a local website by a Japanese travel bureau will provide further information on a conference hotel with reduced rates.
* The conference registration fees will cover merely
administrative costs of Kyoto University.

* Late or On-site Conference Registration Fee: 6000
