[SSJ: 7979] Fellowship Announcement: 12 PhD Fellowships at the Graduate School of East Asian Studies, FU Berlin

From: Katrin Gengenbach
Date: 2013/02/22

Graduate School of East Asian Studies, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany

Due to its successful bid in the German federal and state governments’ Excellence Initiative, Freie Universität Berlin is launching a Graduate School of East Asian Studies. It combines area studies research on East Asia with thorough, discipline-based methodological training and strong language and cultural competence. Its training program is interdisciplinary with special emphasis on historically and culturally informed social science inquiry.

The research program of the Graduate School of East Asian Studies focuses on the study of institutions: rules, norms and practices, both those that are globally general and regionally specific. It aims at developing a theoretically informed and empirically grounded understanding of the origins, effects, and interdependence of institutions in East Asia, both contemporary and historical.

In its three year program, the Graduate School combines East Asian Studies (Japanese, Korean and Chinese Studies) with training in the social sciences (political science, economics, law, social and cultural anthropology) as well as history and cultural studies.

The doctoral training program includes discipline-based methods courses, research seminars, and summer schools with mandatory periods of fieldwork in East Asia as well as specific area-related transferable skills. Doctoral candidates will be prepared for careers in academia and in policy-related areas or business. The language of instruction is English.

The Graduate School of East Asian Studies invites applications for
