Overview
The increasing phenomenon of international marriage migration in Asia needs to be looked at beyond the stereotypical image of the mail-order (or
internet-order) bride. Mr. MacLean will discuss why marriage migrants, almost always women, travel for marriage, the range of experiences they encounter in their journey to a new country, and equally importantly, why potential husbands look abroad for marriage in the first place. The talk will take a broad focus, examining the "push factors" in sending countries like Vietnam, China, and the Philippines, and discussing the "pull factors" in nearby destinations such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.

Speaker
Doug MacLean is a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Tokyo's Center for the Documentation of Migrants and Refugees, where he is currently researching international marriage migration and human trafficking into Japan. A graduate from Georgetown University with a Juris Doctor, he has spent the last six years focused on migration and human trafficking issues. He worked as a senior staffer to a member of the California State Assembly, as a Fellow at the Polaris Project in Washington DC, and as a legal and policy intern at the United Nations Interagency Project on Human Trafficking (UNIAP). His published works include upcoming articles on marriage migration and human trafficking, as well as on the National Human Rights Commission of Korea. A former participant of the JET program, this is his fourth time living in Japan.
