Takashi Shiraishi
Title: "Challenges for Emerging States/Economies"

Summary
The world is changing globally and regionally due to the rise of emerging states and economies. This reality has also given rise to debates about the future of the global and the regional order as well as challenges emerging states/economies face in their development. The question at issue is how to assess the very nature of emerging states and economies, the fact that they matter as much as industrialized states (for instance, G20 has emerged as the major international forum relegating G7 to be a caucus for industrialized states) in terms of national wealth and power while remaining developing countries in terms of their per capita GDP. This means that while they are expected to play an increasingly important role globally and regionally, their governments are expected to deliver on their promise of a better life for their peoples. Prof. Shiraishi will dwell on this question and underscore the need for enlightened political leadership and policy professionals.

10:50 ~ 12:30 Invited Session
Presentations of high-quality policy papers by students representing different programs at GRIPS (nominated by Program Directors).

13:30 ~ 17:10 Concurrent Session
