We are pleased to invite you to the next GRIPS Forum at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies on July 9.

Speaker: Dr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa, Chairman of Congressional Investigation Committee on Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident; Academic Fellow of GRIPS
Theme: “Fukushima Nuclear Accident: Lessons to Learn”

Abstract
Fukushima Nuclear Plant Accident shocked the world as it happened in Japan, a major economy known for science, technology and engineering. The response by the Government and TEPCO to the accident was watched worldwide thru various media and exposed fundamental problems of Japan to the world.
After 9 months of the Accident, the National Diet of Japan enacted and passed a law leading Independent Investigation Commission .
This seminar is to discuss its findings and recommendations and what this Commission means.

Speakers’ Profile:
Kiyoshi Kurokawa is an Academic Fellow of GRIPS, Chairman of Health and Global Policy Institute, Chair and founder of IMPACT Foundation Japan (2010- ), Adjunct Senior Research Scientist of the Earth Institute of Columbia University (2011- ), and Distinguished Research Affiliate of The MIT Media Lab
(2011- ).

A graduate of University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine; he was in the US during 1969-84; he was professor of medicine, departments of medicine of UCLA School of Medicine (1979-84), of University of Tokyo (1989-96), Dean of the Medical School at Tokai University (1996-2002), President of Science Council of Japan (2003-06), Science Advisor to the Prime Minister (2006-08), Commissioner on the WHO Commission for Social Determinants of Health (2005-08); President of International Society of Nephrology, of Pacific Science Association; Served as an executive member of many national and international professional societies of his disciplines and elected member of various scientific societies, eg, Institute of Medicine of National Academy of Sciences of USA. As of December 2011, he has been Chair of Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission by the National Diet of Japan.
