Contemporary Japanese Art After 1990:

The Representation and the Identity of the Japanese Artists in the Global Context

How has contemporary Japanese art been represented outside Japan in the age of globalization? This seminar will examine the issues surrounding Japanese art and its relationship to the West and Asia.

Moderator:
Michio Hayashi
(Professor, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Sophia University) Specializes in modern/contemporary art history and criticism. Publications include Painting Dies Twice, or Never, vol.1-7 (Tokyo: Art Trace, 2003-2009). He co-curated the international exhibition, Cubism in Asia in 2005 (The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo-The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea-Singapore Art Museum).

Presenters:
Adrian Favell
(Professor of Sociology, Sciences Po, Paris) Specialist on international migration, globalisation, and multiculturalism. In April this year he published Before and After Superflat, a history of the Japanese art scene since the 1990s. For more information see his website: www . adrianfavell . com.

Yasuko Furuichi
(Exhibition Coordinator, Asia and Oceania Section, Arts and Culture Department, The Japan Foundation) Has coordinated numerous art exchange projects between the Asian region and Japan since the 1990s.
She has organized exhibitions on Asian art, and more recently, Japanese contemporary art exhibitions in Asia, including Beautiful New World (China, 2007).

Mami Kataoka
(Chief Curator at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo) In addition to the Mori Art Museum, Kataoka’s curatorial practice has extended to many international projects including 9th Gwangju Biennale (2012) in South Korea as the Joint Artistic Director. She also frequently writes and gives lectures on contemporary art in Asia. She was the International Curator at the Hayward Gallery in London between 2007 and 2009.

Kiyoko Mitsuyama-Wdowiak
(Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Comparative Culture in Sophia University) Assistant Curator at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo between 1983 and 1991. Since 1992 she has lived in the UK and has worked as an independent researcher. In 2009 she published a Japanese book entitled ‘Umi wo Wataru Nihon-gendai-bijutsu’ (2009) about the Western reception of post-war Japanese art.
