SUMMARY

Three different territorial disputes--the 3--are causing ongoing strain on Japan's diplomatic relations with Russia, South Korea, and China, respectively.

In the new book Japan's Territorial Problem: The Northern Territories, Takeshima, and the Senkaku Islands, Kazuhiko Togo, along with coauthor Masayasu Hosaka, discusses these three territorial conflicts, and why they continue to fester. Togo, a former ambassador and career foreign service office for Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, draws on his years of regional expertise to both analyze the conflicts and draw up a series of recommendations for steps that Japan could take to help alleviate regional tensions.

Although Japan's Territorial Problem is only available in Japanese at this time, Togo discusses both his findings and recommendations in this NBR Expert Commentary.
