Outline

The global financial crisis in 2008 had a strong impact on all economies, including Asia, However, Asia as a whole fared much better than the rest of the world and is set to continue to grow faster. The presentation will start with an overview of the latest IMF world economic outlook, and then to turn to Asia. It will document Asia's steady rise as a global economic power, and demonstrate that Asia has become a key engine of global growth. Indeed, Asia has accounted for a larger share of global growth than a combined US and EU economic bloc over the past decade and is expected to continue to do so into the foreseeable future. And, perhaps surprising to many, Asia has also become the world's largest consumer market-surpassing even a combined US and EU.

Speaker

Steve Barnett is the Assistant Director at the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Office for Asia and the Pacific in Tokyo, a position he assumed in August 2011. Prior to that, he served as the acting chief of the division responsible for China as well as the mission chief for Mongolia. He has spent much of the past 10 years focusing on Asia, including one year as the IMF's resident representative in Thailand and 3 1/2 years as resident representative in China. In addition, Mr. Barnett has worked on G20 countries such as Turkey and South Africa as well as smaller economies such as Georgia and Bahrain. Prior to joining the IMF in 1997, he earned is PhD in economics from the University of Maryland.
