In all of this talk about how much it costs (both additional money and lost production) to have the nuclear plants voluntarily shut down, I hope we are not losing sight of how much it has already cost and will continue to cost from having had just one complex involuntarily shut down and spew radioactivity.
If nuclear power plants are not 100% safe, itself an impossible requirement, there is no 100% stability there, and I doubt the people of Fukushima feel their own security has been enhanced by the nuclear power plants there.
Rather, the security and stability, as we have seen from the Internet experience, come from having many, many small generation facilities connected to a smart grid (preferably nationwide).
