I am sorry to have so upset Dr.Watanabe. He says that views, forebodings and forecasts such as mine "could be made only by those who would not face any serious consequences with the end of [ the US] alliance unlike many Japanese people. "
Well, I understand the resentment against foreign commentators, and one of the points I have been making is that many Japanese find Chinese and Koreans a bit less foreign than hakujin. (Fragmentary evidence of which came my way a couple of days ago when the Tokyo Shinbun, having pushed out Curtis and then Dore as columnists -- both after more than 20 years -- gave the column for next week to a Korean professor.) But anyway, how "the Japanese people" will react to my views we shall find out when my book is published. If anyone is interested to see a chapter by chapter outline of it, either in English or in Japanese, I shall be happy to e-mail it.
