I would strongly endorse both what Robin and Aurelia wrote regarding stereotyping., although I do think George is also right when he points out that we inevitably have to use short hand. The point is we should use shorthand consciously and carefully.

On the question of whether the US is too diverse to characterize, I would with that, but point out that the same holds true for most other societies as well.
Indeed, saying the US is the most diverse society could end up being a back handed stereotype of others.
Europe is easily as diverse as the US, and, I would add, so is China, India, and Russia. While it would seem harder to make the case for Japan, there are some areas in which Japan is also more diverse, e.g. the range of blogs in Japan versus almost any other nation.
