*Outline*

"From a Golden Age to Nuclear Nightmare: Japan's Energy Policy after 3/11,"
a symposium featuring Tatsujiro Suzuki, the Vice Chairman of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission, and Daniel Aldrich, Associate Professor of Political Science at Purdue University, who will discuss the politics of nuclear energy in Japan.

The Fukushima Nuclear crisis has brought unprecedented attention to Japan's energy policy, and called into question the legitimacy of public institutions, as the Japanese government and TEPCO's response has provoked public outrage about collusive interests, corporate malfeasance and the ineptitude of the organizations charged with dealing with this crisis.
While the 3/11 Tohoku earthquake and subsequent Tsunami caused catastrophic environmental and structural damage to the region, it also exposed longstanding features of the Nuclear Village, and raised questions about how Japan can move forward to develop energy policy in a contentious political environment. With local governments and activist citizen groups challenging the siting of reactors in their vicinity and political activism on the rise amidst widespread public dissent, the nuclear crisis may fundamentally change the nature of civil society in Japan.

This symposium will address the political implications of Japan's nuclear crisis and consider the short term public safety concerns and the long term prospects for Japan to reduce its dependency on nuclear power and adhere to global governance for nuclear safety.
