[SSJ: 6700] Introducing Osaka University's new majors: Contemporary Japan and Global Citizenship

From: Barbara Holthus
Date: 2011/06/06

As part of the G-30 program for internationalization, the School of Human Sciences at Osaka University has created a new undergraduate degree program, taught entirely in English. The program offers two majors:
Contemporary Japan and Global Citizenship.

The Contemporary Japan major offers a broad range of courses that will enable students to gain an in-depth understanding of the social, cultural, economic, political, historical, and linguistic aspects of contemporary Japan.

The Global Citizenship Major encourages students to explore what it means to be a global citizen and provides a learning environment where students can acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and mindset for reflecting critically on and engaging positively with global issues.

Students in both majors receive solid instruction in quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as in the core disciplines of sociology, anthropology, economics, and education. In addition, all students acquire high-level Japanese language proficiency sufficient to take elective courses offered in Japanese in their senior year.

The program has small classes and a low student/teacher ratio.

We will be recruiting our second cohort of students in the autumn 2011 for enrollment in October 2012.
