Outline

Even as a young child, Kyoko Gasha would often exclaim "I'm going for a trip abroad!" whenever her mother put a hat on her head. Born and raised in Japan, she first traveled to the US as an exchange student in high school, returning later as a college student, a Fulbright Scholar, and finally to New York as a journalist for Reuters in 2001. It wasn't long before she realized she was not alone. Why would successful women from one of the world's largest economic powers choose to start their lives over in New York City?" Mothers' Way, Daughters' Choice tries to answer that question, exploring the powerful influence of Japanese culture on Ms. Gasha's life as well as the lives of several other women. Chosen as an official selection for both the Tokyo International Women's Film Festival and the New York International Independent Film Festival, Mothers' Way, Daughters' Choice chronicles their struggle to reconcile a traditional upbringing with the desire to create unique lives.

Director Kyoko Gasha, winner of the Newswomen's Club of New York's 2010 Front Page Award, will join us at the beginning of the screening to briefly discuss the film. Due to a scheduling conflict, she will not be able to attend the Q&A after the film.
