Course: "Japanese Culture and Society" (a 3-credit, short-term, intensive, introductory level course for undergraduates from the University of Michigan)
Compensation: 1,200 (one thousand two hundred) yen per hour
Course duration: May 4, 2018 to May 23, 2018
Course location: Tokyo, Japan (Sophia University campus)
Language of instruction: English
Expected work hours: Approx. 10 - 15 hours per week

About the course:
The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)
Tokyo office, under the umbrella of CIEE in the state of Maine, USA, in
cooperation with Sophia University's Center for Global Discovery, will
run a course on "Japanese Culture and Society" for undergraduate
students from the University of Michigan from May 4 to May 23, 2018.
This intensive, 3-credit course will include in-class sessions as well
as academic field trips within Tokyo. There will be two Sections, each
with approximately 18 students. The course is designed to give students
a comprehensive introduction to Japanese culture and society, covering
topics such as history, popular culture, politics, and others.

Duties:
Work under the direction and supervision of the Course Instructor and CIEE Tokyo staff.
Be familiar with the syllabus, course contents, and current assignments
Assist instructor with attendance, grading, and proctoring of quizzes and tests; manage assessment using Excel
Set up and break down audio-visual equipment
Accompany instructor and students in field activities as much as possible; assure that students do not get lost, manage any personal difficulties and encourage their interest in the activity. Field activities may include, for example, visits to museums, temples, and shrines.
Check email often, handle most matters of email communication with students, and report to instructor when necessary
Receive journal entries from students according to syllabus and mark provisionally as pass or fail, referring "fails" to instructor
Gather materials from library when necessary, prepare copies and pdfs for distribution to students
Seek guidance and assistance from CIEE staff regarding urgent student related concerns (such as medical emergencies or inappropriate behavior) and follow through on communication as needed
Occasional class attendance may be necessary (especially for quizzes, final exam)

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree
Currently pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree
Native-speaker or near-native English ability
Conversational Japanese or higher
Be an intellectually curious person interested in the topics in the syllabus, and have a high degree of maturity and professionalism
Be a supportive, helpful person, easy for students to talk to
Know how to use email communication and Excel effectively
Eligible to work in Japan (for example, Japanese citizen, permanent resident, spouse visa holder, or holder of 資格外活動許可("Permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted")

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree
Currently pursuing a Doctoral degree
