Dear Colleagues:

It is with great pride that NCC launches the beta version of its Image Use Protocol Website. From today, April 6th, through next Friday, April 17th, the site is up for comments, corrections, suggestions and additions. After a few days down for revisions the first edition of the IUP Website will go fully live later this month.

Please find the IUP Website at its new home:

The NCC's IUP Website is covered by a Creative Commons License (Attribution, ShareAlike), the English version of this license is found at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/
and in Japanese at
With proper attribution NCC welcomes your use of IUP materials for nonprofit and educational purposes used in freely shared ways. Please attribute to "NCC Image Use Protocol Website, first edition published April 2009, URL http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~ncc/imageuse/index.html"

During the two week comments period we ask you to review the site. If possible please ask faculty and students to do the same. Please send all comments to vbestor[atx]fas.harvard.edu.

The site as it appears today is still being expanded and further content will be added including acknowledgements to funders and those who contributed enormous amounts of their time and energy to the project. We also ask readers to send us additional useful links to visual image databases. We will be adding a section of images in the public domain and welcome links to those as well. Also if there are terms you would like to see added to the glossary, please suggest them.

This site will eventually offer bilingual content, the Japanese versions of which will be finalized based on the English pages launched after the comments period.

The first Workshop on Image Use Protocol will be held on Thursday, April 30th at University of Maryland, College Park in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of the Gordon W. Prange Collection. To register for that half-day program please contact vbestor[atx]fas.harvard.edu.

Other IUP Workshops will be held in July at the Japanese Studies Association of Australia (JSAA) in Sydney and in September for the European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists (EAJRS) at the Sainsbury Institute, Norwich. If you would like to sponsor an IUP Workshop at your institution please contact NCC.

On behalf of the NCC's Image Use Protocol Task Force thank you for your support of this project. Please provide links to this site from any related web pages.

Most sincerely,

Victoria Lyon Bestor
